I have a small, private Counselling and Psychotherapy practice that has been established for over thirty years. People are prepared to travel quite long distances to see me because of my experience and expertise and because I am trained as a Jungian Analytical Psychotherapist as well as a Counsellor. Following my Psychology Degree I did a full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling which had a major focus on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
It also covered other theoretical approaches, and Psychodynamic Counselling is where I made my professional home because it makes sense to me that we are shaped by our earliest experiences in life and that these provide the template for how we operate in the world. Many people who come to see me suffer with underlying anxieties of one sort or another and/or depression and in spite of appearances to the contrary may feel insecure and lacking in some essential confidence and self-esteem deep inside.
This is due in large part to the patterns that are formed in early relationships which then get repeated later in life.

Services
You are involved in a criminal activity which may be harming another person eg child abuse.
GP Involvement: We usually discuss and agree the need for this at the beginning of our work together.
It may be a good idea to let your GP know if s/he is already involved in your treatment.
I would not contact your GP without your consent.
Supervision: It is a professional requirement that counsellors and therapists are supervised in order to discuss their work.
Surnames are not used and the identity of the client is always protected.

Depression is a common problem in my practice and one that I take seriously.
It is a normal part of life which is why it is so widespread and may be a way of breaking down old psychic structures in order to make new connections.
It is common when loss and major change occur.
We may use CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), which focuses on thoughts and feelings, to generate strategies in order to cope and manage everyday life.
However many people want more than this.
Understanding how depression has come about and what it means, which will be different for each person, can bring great relief.

Sometimes after many attempts at trying to make things better, a couple decide that the best way forward is for them to split up.
This might be a mutual decision but many times one partner takes the initiative in leaving and the other feels left behind (or 'dumped').
Counselling can help to clarify the issues and face the difficulties and decisions that need to be taken and move the process forwards.
People may attend sessions separately or together.

This is a long-term, intensive journey and usually a patient attends two or three times each week.
It therefore requires a significant commitment on both sides and of course a considerable financial outlay.
Its purpose is a process that Jung called 'individuation' which involves bringing to the surface of life, treasures from the depths.
It deepens and enlarges a person and confronting dark and painful areas of the self is an important part of the work.
This strengthens the foundations of the personality and leads towards a generative and creative outcome.
