Because it takes courage to confront your issues and your behaviours. Counselling and Psychotherapy should always be gentle and rewarding but it is also hard work too. My name is John Maguire, I am a qualified Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor. I work with both men and women however, I have a particular interest and extensive experience in Men's issues.
I also offer group work and coaching. I teach on the Post Graduate Certificate & Diploma courses in Counselling & Psychotherapy at Edinburgh University. I am highly experienced in working with issues around sex, sexual abuse, post traumatic stress, worrying sexual interests/behaviours, relationship issues (including domestic violence), gender dysphoria, sex/pornography addiction and also self esteem and confidence issues.
Where possible I will consider lower cost options and try and accommodate those on low incomes. I also offer special counselling rates to those who commit to longer term arrangements such as trainee counsellors.

Services
Whilst I have significant experience in working with both men and women, I mostly work with men.
Research shows that men are significantly less likely to seek counselling than women.
I believe that this is because many counsellors and counselling agencies don't take seriously enough the issues that men struggle with at different points in their lives.
My aim is to provide a counter to this, providing a space where a man can explore his emotions, fears, confusion, secrets and losses without judgement, labeling or shame.

I am sensitive to issues around Supervision Anxiety and take a warm, gentle and encouraging approach.
I never reprimand or criticise supervisees.
I explore with them what is happening in their relationships with clients and focus on keeping them both safe.
I take a strong interest in protecting supervisees from parallel processes, over-involvement and vicarious trauma.
I also can provide supervision to groups such as staff teams, volunteers, trainees and students.
For the last few years, I have been providing group supervision to Homelessness staff at Brighton City Council and to Trainee Counsellors from Brighton University.

The therapy I provide is based primarily within the Humanistic School of Psychotherapy.
I draw on Person Centred, Psychodynamic and Solution Focused approaches I also use Gestalt and Transactional Analysis exercises to help a client explore and understand themselves.
However what does any of that that actually mean?
It basically means that in my counselling practice, I offer clients respect, warmth and complete honesty.
Your life journey is your own and the choices you make are made against the backdrop of your unique life story.
