Expert counselling to help you understand and resolve your anxiety issues so that you can live your life to the full. Is anxiety stopping you from living the life you really want? Do you have hopes and dreams about what life might hold yet worry endlessly that these dreams may never become a reality because of anxiety? You can change. It's possible to push back against extreme anxiety and embrace the freedom that life has to offer.
Sometimes all that's required is an experienced guide to help you. Understand how your negative thinking gives rise to excessive worry and what to do about it. Know when your anxiety is just a discomfort that you can well tolerate rather than an indicator of genuine danger. Deal successfully with other challenging emotions such as fear, nervousness, panic, anger, guilt and shame.
I'm Richard Swynnerton, a counsellor and psychotherapist with over twenty-five years of experience helping people just like you to get to grips with their anxiety issues and much more.

Services
Perhaps you would like to have counselling sessions but for one reason or another, it's difficult for you to attend regular appointments in person.
This is where I come in.
I have many years' experience of counselling people online and am confident that working this way can be just as effective and beneficial as sessions which take place in person.
The first step is to touch base with me.
You can message me directly from my contact page or give me a call to discuss your situation.
That's it.
It really couldn't be easier.

My approach to psychotherapy and counselling is one which is concerned with helping you to arrive at your own insights and to make the choices and decisions which you feel are right for you rather than attempting to "cure" or change behaviour which may in fact be fundamental to your way of living.
I believe that mental health and well-being depends largely on our ability to live life in accordance with our own deeply held values and aspirations rather than those imposed upon us by others and it is my job to help you to do just this.

If you would like to have counselling sessions with me either online or in person, the first step is to touch base with me either by sending me a message or giving me a call.
I can then arrange for you to have an initial counselling session with me.
This will give you an opportunity to tell me about your current difficulties and to ask me any questions which you might have about how I work and what to expect from our sessions.
It's then very much up to you to decide whether you would like to book further sessions.

A counsellor and psychotherapist with over twenty-five years of experience helping people resolve their personal difficulties.
During this time, I've worked for a variety of public sector organisations and training institutions while maintaining a private practice throughout.
I decided to train to be a therapist back in 1992 after a rewarding experience in personal therapy.
Making better sense of my experience and getting a clearer perspective on my life gave me the confidence and conviction in counselling and psychotherapy as an invaluable aid for self-development and personal growth and it's something I've felt passionate about ever since.

One of the greatest obstacles we encounter in our quest to pursue our goals in life is the fear of failure.
We worry about falling short of our expectations, of being found wanting, of not being good enough.
If we're not careful, we can get into what therapists often refer to as "dichotomous thinking."
In other words, we come to see things in very black and white terms.
For instance, I'm either a great success or a complete failure and nothing in between.
This emphasis on outcome gives rise to a pernicious perfectionism which can stop us in our tracks.
