I have worked in the NHS for 16 years - fourteen as a practice counsellor in a local GP practice and two as a supervisor of other therapists in a Community Mental Health team. I also worked in Relate for fourteen years. Prior to all that I trained as a Mental health social worker, and taught in Wormwood Scrubs prison. In 1998, I set up in a private practice in a small way in Trowbridge, and now this has expanded into seeing most of my clients there.

I also offer supervision to practicing counsellors and work as a supervisor in two addiction agencies. My Relate background was in short term therapy and also in systemic therapy, looking at the whole person in their environment.
Services
As children we are born in relationship to others.
How we deal with relationships now is often based on a series of unrevised assumptions and feelings about ourselves and others which have come from the past.
You may come to counselling for a variety of reasons.
It may be a result of life experiences which have gone wrong, or ways of relating which have become too firmly entrenched.
You may have become depressed or anxious.
Sometimes, as with bereavement, you may need to mourn with someone who is not afraid of letting you do so.
The theoretical framework I use to understand my clients is called integrative, which means that it draws from a number of different disciplines as appropriate.
I often work with CAT which is a short, time limited framework, typically lasting no longer than sixteen sessions, and which has a definite beginning, middle and end.
This allows for the task to be defined, and saves you feeling you are embarking on endless counselling with no end in sight.
I use CBT methods within that, setting tasks and homework so that the sessions effectively carry on out of the room.
As a member of BACP, I am bound by their code of ethics, and should you wish to view this, please look under the relevant websites listed here.
I will keep what you say confidential, and it will only be discussed if there appears to be a possibility of you harming yourself or others.
Ideally I would discuss it with you before breaking confidentiality.
Like all counsellors, I do have supervision to help me understand what is happening with my cases.
In such a case the client is identified by first name only, and no identifying details are disclosed.
