Resolving to make changes to our lifestyles often seems easy at the beginning of the year. The New Year is a time for New year's Resolutions. Whether we're optimistic at the start of a New Year stretching out before us, or just recovering from the excesses of the night before, it seems the right time to draw a line in the sand. I am a BACP accredited counsellor.
This year I will get fit, give up smoking, improve my relationships, take control of my life. We make firm resolutions and resolve to improve or find a relationship, deal with issues at work, change jobs, or just make time to do those important things that we keep putting off. We feel good about making these resolutions and for a while we feel better about ourselves.
But then things start to slide. There's nothing wrong about the idea of of resolutions. It's good to take stock of our lives from time to time and decide on a new focus or sense of direction. But there is no reason to limit ourselves to doing this only once a year.
