If you are considering having counselling and live in the area around Linton, Cambridgeshire this information could be helpful for you. My counselling practice is in Linton, a few miles from Cambridge, Saffron Walden and Haverhill. If you have never experienced counselling before here are a few points you may want to consider. First of all counselling is not about me telling you what to do.

Rather it is about having the opportunity to be heard, to be understood and to be helped to find your own way forward. I can help you, by being gently challenging, to realize that it is possible to change what is difficult in our lives by looking at our own behaviour. After all, you can't change anyone else! The decision to go for counselling is a considerable commitment on your part.

It will be a commitment of your time, money and energy so it makes sense to do a little research, speak to a few counsellors to find out if you feel comfortable talking with them. Sometimes a short period of weekly sessions (maybe 8 - 20) will be sufficient to give you the confidence to go forward on your own.
Services
As well as starting a private practice I also worked as a volunteer in a specialist agency for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
My private practice encompasses short term focussed work and also longer term work for those people who wish to explore their issues more deeply.
I am a member of the BACP, (the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and work in accordance with their Ethical Framework.
This document is available at www.bacp.co.uk.
It explains in some detail the fundamental rules governing the therapeutic relationship with regard to client safety, confidentiality etc.
The basic context I provide is a safe environment where you are treated with respect, empathy and total confidentiality.
I will never judge or criticize you, but that does not mean that you may not feel challenged during our dialogue.
My core training followed the teaching of Alfred Adler, who was a humanistic psychologist and a contemporary of Freud.
He was hugely influential on many current strands of therapeutic work, including cognitive behavioural and humanistic, though largely unacknowledged by those who used his original ideas.
