Our counselling service seeks to support you when you need space to talk through your experiences or concerns, by providing empathic, non-judgemental time with one of our Counsellors. We provide free counselling for those unable to contribute financially, and ask for a donation from all clients, where they are able. All our Counsellors are registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and are either fully qualified or in the latter stages of their training.

People access our counselling service for a wide range of reasons, including anxiety, bereavement, depression, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and experiences of abuse. We aim to offer a safe, caring, person-centred environment in which you can explore what is important to you and feel supported in doing so, along the way. In rare circumstances, we may feel that clients presenting with serious mental health conditions may find more appropriate care through their GP or another service.

If this is the case, we will talk this through with you - usually at the referral stage - and will suggest alternatives, where possible.
Services
NLCS began when our founder, retired Reverend Arthur Longworth, set about to create a counselling centre for local people.
He recognised the need in all of us to have a space in which we can feel heard and listened to, and his aim was to achieve this by providing a warm, welcoming service delivered by trained volunteers.
The foundations of North Lancashire Counselling Service were established in 1991, and 30 years later we are still going strong.
Our volunteer-led service provides counselling to adults aged 18 and above.
My experience with the service has been entirely positive.
It has helped me to realise and express some of the issues exacerbating my mental health problems, and has helped me better my life.
I have found the flexibility of your service to go on for as long or short a time, very helpful to really get to the heart of issues.
Rather than the NHS option of 10 weeks and that's it!
I feel this went the course of going through issues to natural solutions.
Even though I could continue, it feels right to stop and consolidate, continue to process on my own and hopefully not need any more support, but reassuring to know I could make contact again.
In a typical week, the charity helps more than 30 individuals, on both a long- and short-term basis.
Many of these people would not receive the help they need if NLCS did not exist.
We do not charge clients a fixed fee for our services, and so we are completely dependent on voluntary donations and grants.
If you are able to offer aid of any size, we would be extremely grateful.
Donations are welcome from anyone, whether you are a client, a friend or family member, or would simply like to support us.
Our WHAT WE DO page provides more information on the service our counsellors provide, including our person-centred based approach, duration, limits to provision, and our hope to support our local community.
We currently have a waiting list, and appointments are offered on a first-come basis, rather than on the reason for attending.
Clients need to be able to contact us direct, we appreciate this may not always be easy, however we cannot accept referrals on behalf of clients.
If you find using the telephone difficult, please email us at info@northlancscounselling.org.uk.
In-training counsellors should be attending training that provides a professional qualification (Diploma-level or above) on completion and should be approved as ready for practice by their course tutors.
You will need to have successfully completed your programme's required assignments prior to interview and be able to confirm this.
Qualified counsellors should possess a relevant qualification.
We will normally consider applicants from courses that are equivalent to the BACP course accreditation requirements.
